Ayoola’s innovation “SmartBin” uses image recognition and artificial intelligence to recognize waste items thrown into it and sorts individual material types into separate inner bins. This eradicates human error in source sorting of recyclables and reduces the contamination rate to less than 5%. Furthermore, the technology incentivizes users with social rewards and hence minimize nonchalance. The technology also offers a positive financial impact by reducing the waste management bill of facilities by 30% through offering real time tracking of the quantity and type of waste and introducing a revenue stream in the sale of clean and sorted recyclables.
