Enhance the use of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) for the treatment of hematological diseases

Asmaa is currently working toward herdoctorate at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology. At the bachelor's level, her focus was on medical laboratory science. After that, she pursued a Master's Degree in Bioscience, specializing on cell and molecular biology.

She first assessed the homing mechanisms of key HSC populations (CD34positive HSCs and CD34negative HSCs from cord blood provided by Saudi Cord Blood Bank), and then used various molecular technologies within our toolbox to improve HSC homing and engraftment efficiency.

Briefly, She developed a toolbox of molecular technologies to enhance Step 1 effectors of HSCs homing and engraftment. In particular, she generated a recombinant fucosyltransferase (rhFTVI) enzyme to catalyze the final step of homing molecule synthesis.

Obtaining insight into how HSCs move in the body and what treatment option for leukemia and the interlink among them is of valuable importance to advance our knowledge of biomedical sciences and prevent the relapse of human blood cancers.
