هو رسالة صوتية مخزنة إلكترونياً يتركها المتصل ليتم استردادها لاحقاً من قبل المستلم المقصود، إذ يمكن للمستلم استرداد الرسالة المخزنة من خلال الهاتف والبريد الإلكتروني وأجهزة الاتصالات اعتماداً على نظام هاتف العمل الذي تستخدمه شركة المستلم.
تم اختراع البريد الصوتي في أواخر السبعينيات من قبل رجل الأعمال الراحل جوردون ماثيوز الذي أنشأ شركة تُسمّى (VMX).
في البداية كانت أنظمة البريد الصوتي باهظة الثمن، وبالتالي كانت متاحة فقط لأكبر الشركات. ومع ذلك، مع إدخال لوحات معالجة الصوت القائمة على الحاسوب، تمكن مطورو البرمجيات من تطوير برامج البريد الصوتي التي تعمل على الحواسيب الشخصية القياسية، ما جعل إنتاج أنظمة البريد الصوتي أقل تكلفة.
