هي مكتبة تشفير مفتوحة المصدر تُستخدم للأغراض العامة بحيث تسمح للمستخدمين تنفيذ بروتوكولات طبقة المقابس الآمنة (SSL) وأمان طبقة النقل (TLS)، كما تسمح بأداء العديد من المهام المتعلقة بطبقة المقابس الآمنة بما في ذلك طلب توقيع الشهادة وتوليد المفاتيح الخاصة وإصدار الشهادات.
تم اختراع بروتوكول إس إس إل عام 1995 من قبل شركة نتسكيب للاتصالات (Netscape Communications) وتم استبعاده في عام 2015 بعد ظهور بروتوكول أمان طبقة النقل (TLS).
SSL عبارة عن بروتوكول مصمم لتوفير اتصالات آمنة عبر شبكات الحاسوب غير الآمنة. وتكون شبكة الحاسوب غير الآمنة عبارة عن شبكة يمكن قراءة البيانات المرسلة ضمنها وتغييرها بواسطة عقدة شبكة وسيطة ضارة. مثال على مثل هذه الشبكات غير الآمنة هو الإنترنت.
في المقابل، في الاتصال الآمن لا يمكن قراءة البيانات المرسلة أو تغييرها. ويحقق بروتوكول SSL أمان الاتصال باستخدام التشفير المتماثل وغير المتماثل.
